Award-winning promotional CD-ROM

Sutter Home Moodmaker is an ambient "audio screensaver" that recreates the natural ambience of Napa Valley. It was created in conjunction with Red Sky Interactive, another of our long-term clients, and the most innovative digital agency in San Francisco at the height of the dot-com era. Moodmaker was built with Macromedia Director and Beatnik, an interactive music player created by Thomas Dolby. While most people consider Beatnik to be an interactive music player, we looked under the hood and saw its true potential. It's really a software-based synthesizer that can load, modify and play custom audio samples.

Moodmaker combines a small library of nature sounds with sophisticated code that varies the playback so that you'll never hear the same thing twice. A control panel lets the listener customize every aspect of the performance (including an extensive, evolving musical soundtrack), and save their own settings. Moodmaker was distributed as a free mini CD hung on the neck of 1,000,000 Sutter Home wine bottles. Download it here (PC only, 11MB).

Casual game music tricks

Sebring Lane Change is a "Bejeweled"-style Flash game created for Chrysler in conjunction with Forge FX, BBDO and Organic. It features a carefully designed soundtrack that adds new musical content as bandwidth becomes available. By combining a handful of short music clips and an XML playlist in the first download, the player is up and running quickly. But there's still plenty of variety, since the playlist juggles five short music clips, creating a minute's worth of music out of 15 seconds of MP3 data. As soon as the game is running and bandwidth is available again, additional music and XML scripts are downloaded as separate SWFs and loaded into the game. This lets us create an evolving, compelling musical soundtrack that doesn't suffer from the usual limitations of the 30-second music loop. Cross- faded background ambience helps to delineate between game levels, and help draw the player's attention to the informational screens promoting different features of the car. Finally, notice how all the UI elements are tuned to blend seamlessly into the music.
